Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful break. I've spent a lovely week in South Devon and now finishing off the holiday in Calne, Wiltshire. As the New Year begins I like to take out my rune set, which I made in 2018, and throw the runes to see what they say for the year ahead in answer to a question or intention.
As the first light of 2025 dawned, I cast a full rune reading, asking: Where does my creative focus lie for this year? The runes offered deep and layered insights—personal guidance for my journey that I believe can also inspire your own creative process.
Today, I want to share the essence of this reading with you, weaving its themes into messages you can use to navigate your own year of creativity, transformation, and joy.
1. Creativity Flows Like Water
At the top of my reading sat Laguz (ᛚ), the rune of water and flow. Creativity arises when we are in flow—connected to ourselves, the world, and our practices. For me, this means reconnecting with the healing power of cold-water sea swimming. The beach is at the end of my street and I like to swim through the year. But due to illness this Autumn I had lapsed since October. But kick starting again in December has spurred me on to resume.
Ask yourself: What keeps you in flow? What practices restore your energy and open the channels for creativity?
2. Ancestral Roots and Stories Waiting to Be Told
One powerful theme in my reading was ancestral connection. This grouping spoke powerfully of the ancestral stories that are part of my creative work.
Odal (ᛟ): Inheritance, legacy, and the roots of who we are.
Hel (ᚺ): Death, the unseen, and the mysteries of the underworld.
Perthro (ᛈ): The well of memory, and the womb of creation.
Ingwaz (ᛜ): The seed, grounding potential, and the connection between earth and sky.
The runes reminded me that creativity often springs from our roots—from the deep well of memory. Part of my work this year is to continue to heal and honour the untold stories of my ancestors that are waiting to surface.
What stories—ancestral or personal—are waiting to be told through you? How can you ground yourself to approach them with compassion.
3. Transforming Vision Into Reality
Tiwaz (ᛏ): Direction, purpose, and warrior energy.
Fehu (ᚠ): Wealth and resources (reversed, signaling caution in how I use them).
Mannaz (ᛗ): Human connection and relationships that nourish creativity.
Ansuz (ᚨ): Creativity, communication, and inspiration.
Kenaz (ᚲ): Light, knowledge, and illumination (reversed, shining inward).
Dagaz (ᛞ): Transformation and breakthrough
Creativity is alchemy—a process of transformation. This year, I’m beginning a huge project: an embroidery of my ancestral tree, a vision I’ve carried for some years now. Its scale is daunting, but the runes urged me to take the first step to begin the embroidery.
What vision(s) have you been carrying? What first step can you take to bring them into reality?
4. Finding and Singing Your Soul Song
The third grouping felt deeply personal and resonant. It calls me to birth my soul song—a song that has been with me since my life began, growing and evolving through the cycles of time.
Bjarka (ᛒ): The birch tree, new beginnings, and nurturing.
Uruz (ᚢ): Primal strength and the life force.
Jera (ᛃ): Cycles, harvest, and growth over time.
Ingwaz (ᛜ): The seed of potential within the song itself.
The birch mother, Bjarka, appeared in my reading, calling me to birth my soul song, which was the message she gave me at the end of my Utiseta last summer. A soul song is one that has been with us since birth, growing and evolving over time. Before I can help others find theirs, I must first uncover my own.
Spend time listening for your soul song. What is the essence of who you are, expressed through your creative work.
5. Spiritual Paths as Creative Nourishment
Naudiz (ᚾ): Sacrifice, perseverance, and the wisdom earned through challenge.
Gifu (ᚷ): Partnership, balance, and gifts.
Wunjo (ᚹ): Joy, harmony, and creative fulfillment.
The runes reminded me of the importance of my spiritual path. For me, this means weaving together heathen traditions and and the wisdom of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. I had a recent vision in a drum journey at the Winter Solstice that these two traditions can work together in tandem. There need not be an either / or. The two paths full of stories, teaching and insights enrich each other.
What spiritual practices or stories inspire your creativity? Let them guide and nourish your work.
6. Sound and Movement as Creative Tools
The fifth grouping emphasized sound, movement, and energy release.
Raido (ᚱ): Travel, rhythm, and the journey.
Ehwaz (ᛖ): Partnership, movement, and the power of horses.
The act of drumming is central to my creative process. It releases energy, opens me to the voices of my ancestors, and helps me translate spiritual visions into creative expression.
Experiment with sound or movement. Whether it’s drumming, dancing, or chanting, let rhythm and energy guide your creative flow.
7. Navigating Chaos with Creativity
The final grouping spoke of fire and ice—forces of chaos and balance.
Sol (ᛋ): The sun, fire, and vitality.
Isa (ᛁ): Ice, stillness, and focus.
Thuraz (ᚦ): Thor’s hammer, chaos, and disruption.
The final runes in my reading spoke of fire and ice, chaos and balance. 2025 is likely to be a disruptive year globally, and the runes remind me that creativity can be a tool to process and navigate these times.
How can you use your creativity to channel and make sense of the chaos around you?
Chants and Symbols for the Year Ahead
As part of this process, I’ve also been creating chants and bind runes for each grouping of my reading. Here are a few to inspire your own practices:
For Flow: "Flow through water, flow through me; creativity flow, for I am free."
For Transformation: "Vision to form, fire and light; bring the shadows into sight"
For Balance: "Fire and ice, hammer and storm; balance the chaos, creation is born."
I’ll be creating bind runes—visual symbols that combine the rune energies of these themes—and incorporating them into my creative work this year. You might try crafting your own!
This is how I’m entering 2025: with a commitment to honouring my creative flow, transforming my visions into reality, and staying grounded amidst the turbulence of the wider world. I hope these reflections inspire you to step into your own creative journey this year.
May 2025 bring you flow, transformation, and joy.
With lots of love
